SALUTATIONS NEIGHBORS!

from Councilwoman Lisa Leger Frazier

As we embark on a new fiscal year, I thought you should know about some of the Town's accomplishments over the past year. As the "main dog in the fight" for redevelopment and improvements to our infrastructure, I am proud to state that, true to my campaign statements, we have budgeted for the following improvements in the 1997-1998 fiscal year and reduced taxes.

Master Plan for Causeway and Parks (Riverside, Orlando and Douglas). Based on a series of public workshops held earlier this year and attended by the administration, myself as a Council representative and the Parks/Recreation/Beautification Committee, it was determined what improvements are desired for these areas. Improvements will include: new basketball courts, restrooms, paved paths and playground equipment for Orlando Park; controlled use, erosion control, revegetation and beautification of the Causeway; and boardwalk, parking and beautification of Riverside Park. The Riverside Park improvements are being coordinated with the Eastminister Presbyterian Church.

The Redevelopment/Main Street Program is underway! We have hosted a series of visits from the Main Street Resource Team to review retail, traffic, architecture, organization and promotion issues. These visits are services awarded as part of our Main Street Grant. The Redevelopment Committee and sub-committees have been hard at work reviewing design plans, ordinances and promotion. A business directory, created by the Redevelopment Committee, will soon be available at local businesses as well as to the larger hotels in the area. Volunteers, especially from the business community, are sorely needed. This is your chance to determine the future of the business district! We have requested assistance from the Melbourne/Palm Bay Area Chamber of Commerce in promoting the Main Street Program. Hopefully the Chamber can promote the intent of the program and be a stronger representative of the business community.

Master Plan for Business District. I have met with our consultants to discuss providing a Master Plan for the Downtown Business District. The Plan would include a parking and mobility study that would guide us for future growth in our community. I am sure you have noticed the extremely rapid growth occurring within and beyond the Town's boundaries this past year. We need to prepare ourselves for the impact this growth will bring to our Town. Indialantic is full of character that can be preserved by planning ahead now! The consultant will hold another charette (design workshop) similar to the one held two years ago. The workshop dates will be announced. Please plan on attending!

Stormwater improvements are in the works! I am personally pleased and professionally gratified to be part of a retrofit program that is economical, environmentally conscious and functional. The St. Johns River Water Management District's Stormwater Improvement Management (SWIM) program to improve water quality and reduce non-point pollutant discharges into the Indian River Lagoon , has supported our efforts for the past two years with $20,000.00 grants and will again provide us with funding for the next fiscal year (1998-1999). This is a forward thinking program that reduces direct discharge into the Lagoon and reduces flooding in our streets.

Town of Indialantic On-Line. Thanks to the efforts of Bill Frazier, Troy Morris and Ron Campbell, we have entered the 21st Century with a web page and e-mail service. This service was my idea to improve communication between the residents/businesses and the Town. Information on various departments as well as agendas, minutes of meetings and other public information will soon be at your fingertips.

As an elected official, I consider myself your community representative. As such I am very proud of the work we have accomplished and am excited to begin the work we have planned. These improvements can be made without raising tax dollars with the incentive and imagination of the individuals you have working for you: the Council, Administration, consultants and numerous volunteers who serve the Town. I urge you to support these community endeavors. On a final note, the election year is upon us once again - thankfully I am not campaigning! However, it is important for you to vote for the local officials whose decisions directly effect you. Please support those candidates that will be your voice and vote during these exciting times!

IT'S ROUNDUP TIME!!

Brevard County's Fall 1997 Household Hazardous Waste Roundup will be held Saturday, October 25 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Greater Palm Bay Senior Center, 1275 Culver Dr. NE.

Homeowners are encouraged to bring all their hazardous waste including oil and latex paints and thinners, aerosol cans, used motor oil, transmission and brake fluids, thermostats, thermometers, flourescent lamps and pool, lawn and garden chemicals for free disposal. This is a convenient opportunity to reduce hazardous waste around the house as well as reduce exposure to these toxins.
