INDIALANTIC
                RECORD         February 2007

YOU’RE INVITED!!!

The public is invited to participate in the Town’s Comprehensive Plan Evaluation and Appraisal Report (EAR) process.  A workshop has been scheduled for 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 27, 2007, at the Zoning & Planning Board meeting in Town Hall.

James G. LaRue, President of LaRue Planning & Management Services, Inc, will facilitate the gathering of information at the workshop.  Mr. LaRue is the Town’s planning consultant.

The Town is required to submit the EAR to the Florida Department of Community Affairs (DCA) by November 7, 2007.  The EAR shall contain updated language, maps, and illustrations to address land use changes (including annexations that may have occurred), the extent of vacant and developable property, changes in population growth, the financial feasibility of implementing comprehensive plan provisions including infrastructure needed to maintain desired levels of service, major issues facing the Town, and include a brief assessment of successes and shortcomings related to each element of the comprehensive plan.  The Town’s current comprehensive plan was last modified in 1999.

Mr. LaRue will explain the purpose of the EAR and its relationship to the comprehensive plan at the workshop as well as gather ideas as to how residents want to see the Town evolve.  The report will eventually be approved by the Zoning & Planning Board, Town Council and DCA.

POLICE BEAT

The Police Department frequently receives calls in reference to door-to-door solicitation. Under Indialantic Town Code Section 10-17 it is only unlawful for a commercial solicitor or peddler to go in or on a private residence if the property owner or occupant has given notice that they are not interested in being approached by a peddler or solicitor. Notice may be given by posting and continuously maintaining a sign not to exceed 4” X 12” in a conspicuous location on the private residential property which states “No Soliciting” or words of a substantially similar nature. The owner or agent of a non-condominium apartment building may post the common areas of the apartment property. Peddlers and solicitors are not required to be licensed by the Town and the code does not address solicitation at a business or a condominium. The full text of the code can be viewed on the Town web site, www.indialantic.com or a copy can be obtained at Town Hall. “No Solicitation” signs are available for purchase from the volunteers at the Indialantic Fire Department (723-0366) for $5.00. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call either Community Policing Officer Terry Tenpenny or myself at 723-7788.

Residents are reminded that when leaving Town they should remember to cancel newspaper subscriptions, have mail retained at the post office or by a neighbor, and have a neighbor pick up any advertisements or newspapers that are left in front of their property.

Cliff Notes:

Spring is just around the corner and work is beginning to pick up.  Before you hire a contractor, whether you are having a fence installed or building a new home, please take the time to do some background checking.  Ask for references and call them.  You can also call the County Contractor Licensing at 633-2058 to check for complaints. The Department of Business and Professional Regulation should also be contacted to determine the current license status.  This could help you avoid potential problems.

 INDIALANTIC FIRE RESCUE

The Fire Department has been very busy with training and other ancillary work. Three of our firefighters were recently certified as Live Fire Burn Instructors. We are currently performing business fire safety inspections and are about to begin our annual fire hydrant testing. When the department tests hydrants it will sometimes cause the water in your home to discolor. This is a short-term event and can usually be resolved by letting your water run for a couple of minutes. Should you be washing clothes they may become discolored from the water. If this happens please contact Melbourne Water as they have a product that will restore the clothes from the discolored water. Please feel free to contact the fire department at 723-0366 to see if we will be flowing hydrants in your area.

For all homeowners please note that house numbers are required on all homes in Indialantic. “The house number of every residence and commercial establishment shall be prominently displayed on the face of the building, or on a mailbox or other structure near the street. The numbers shall not be more than 75 feet from the property line, and shall be clearly visible from the street.”

“Numbers may be numerals or script and shall be in contrast with the color of the immediate background on which they are mounted. The numbers shall be at least two and one-half inches in height, for residences and three and one-half inches in height for commercial premises.

We will be checking for compliance with this ordinance while we perform our annual hydrant inspections.

Jon Macdonald, Fire Chief

The Indian River Lagoon – How You Can Help

ü    Use ground covers such as composted leaves and wood chips on areas with exposed soil to keep the soil from washing into the lagoon.  Areas susceptible to sediment erosion are drip lines under roof eaves and downspouts.

ü    Don’t blow grass clippings into the street or dump them down storm drains.  Leave the clippings on your lawn after mowing; nutrients in the clippings make the best and cheapest fertilizers.

ü    Use environmentally friendly alternatives to pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Call the University of Florida Extension Service – 633-1702 - to obtain a free copy of the Florida Yardstick Workbook.

ü    Whenever possible choose plants that require little or no fertilizer.  When fertilizing choose a fertilizer that has nitrogen in a slow–release insoluble form; fertilize during the dry months (Oct. to May) and use the least amount of fertilizer necessary.  Wash your car on your lawn and fertilize your grass at the same time.
