DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS PROGRESS

PIPE INSTALLATION

Drainage improvements continue in Town as Atlantic Development of Cocoa, Inc. provides relief to the 400 block of Oakland Avenue.  This portion of Town has experienced significant amounts of water backing up during heavy rainfall.

Improvements consisted of installing a pipe parallel to one that has experienced restricted flow.  Additional work in May, 2006, by Atlantic Development includes replacing a failing pipe under S. Riverside Drive at the Town boundary.  Earlier in the year the metal pipe under S. Riverside Drive at Orlando Boulevard was replaced.

The closed portion of the Town’s drainage system comprises approximately 38,000 linear feet of 45 year old metal pipe that is in need of replacement.  Pipes presenting a hazard to motorists have been the Town’s highest priority for replacement in recent years.  Lesser priority for pipe replacement have included pipes obstructing flow resulting in flooded conditions and pipes under streets scheduled for resurfacing.

SWALE CONSTRUCTION

Public Works personnel have been installing drainage swales, with the support of area residents, at various locations within Town street rights-of-way. Recent swale improvements include 300 Miami Avenue, 325 Miami Avenue, 335 Miami Avenue, 123 Second Avenue, and 400 Michigan Avenue.  Most rights-of-way are sixty feet wide.

Council adopted the shallow swale concept in 1991 when it accepted the Stormwater Drainage Report.  Property owners desiring to have a swale installed in the street right-of-way in front of their property should contact Public Works Director Ron Cassedy at 984-5224

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS

Hurricane season is again upon us and lasts through November 30. August and September are the peak months for storm activity. Hurricane hazards can include flooding, storm surge, high winds or tornados.  Please be prepared.

Have disaster supplies on hand – flashlight, battery operated radio, extra batteries, first aid kit, non-electric can opener, medications, three day supply of food and water; cash; gas in car

Prepare your property – protect windows with shutters or plywood; secure garage door; bring in outdoor objects such as lawn furniture, toys and garden tools; turn refrigerator and freezer to coldest settings; store valuables and important papers in waterproof containers – trim dead or weak branches from trees far enough in advance of hurricanes so that the debris can be removed by Harris Sanitation

Evacuate if advised by officials – have an evacuation route planned (be prepared to drive 20 to 50 miles inland); make arrangements for pets; unplug appliances and turn off electricity and main water valve; return home only after officials advise that it is safe to do so.  Develop an emergency communication plan in case family members are separated.

POLICE BEAT

The Indialantic Police Department and our Community Oriented Policing Unit are committed to providing you with a variety of community relations and crime prevention programs.  These programs can help reduce crime and improve the quality of life in our Town.

We offer several programs such as neighborhood watch, home security surveys, house checks, fingerprinting, project identification, well-being checks, bicycle registration and facility tours.  To find out more information about these programs visit our website at www.indialantic.com and click on police department, then public services or contact Officer Terry Tenpenny at  ttenpenny@indialantic.com and/or 321-723-7788 Ext. 115.

The Brevard County Triad, Inc. in conjunction with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is offering an innovative program called “Project Lifesaver” that can aid families in  locating missing loved ones who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia or children with autism who may wander away from their homes. Persons enrolled in this program wear an ankle bracelet or wrist band that emits a special signal.  These signals are transmitted to a receiving device that can be picked up in the air in a specially equipped Sheriff’s helicopter. When a caregiver or family member calls 911 to report a missing person, 911 operators contact the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit.  Within minutes, a Sheriff’s Office helicopter is in the air responding to the missing person.  Search times can now be reduced from hours or days to minutes.  Nationally, in more than 1,000 searches, there have been no reported serious injuries or deaths with the program and the average recovery time is less than 30 minutes.  A bracelet costs $290.00 and there is an annual fee of $100.00 for monthly battery replacements.  There are flexible payment plans and bracelets can be provided at no cost to those who qualify under the federal poverty guidelines. This program provides comfort and peace of mind to families in knowing their loved one can be located quickly.  If you need further information about “Project Lifesaver” or wish to enroll a loved one, please call the Community Services Council’s Senior HELPLINE at (321) 631-2747.

As summer approaches we remind you to please remember to lock your vehicles and safeguard your personal property when visiting the beach.  Also, we ask that you continue to report suspicious persons and activities by calling the Police Department.  Although our officers are out there, we still need to rely on our citizen’s eyes and ears to help protect the community.

Building Corner – Cliff Stokes

There has been a tremendous amount of work being done in Town in the past year.  Fifth Avenue has had some major projects completed and there are more in the works.  Indialantic One condominiums are moving along and building #1 of the Magnolia Key condominiums is almost completed. A two story office building is being constructed in the 300 block of Fourth Avenue and several new homes are under construction, some of which are the result of hurricane damage.  The following is a summary of activity during the past twelve months:

Permits issued  :  476

Construction Value:  $7,830,739

Inspections:  1,199

New commercial site plans:  5

  INDIALANTIC FIRE RESCUE

The Fire Department has received a video program called “Fire Is”. Written and produced by Dr. Frank Field, this video is designed for the elderly and young children to explain what fire really is and not what we see in movies or on T.V. It is approximately one hour long and explains what someone can anticipate in the event of a fire in the home. It is reality with scenes of actual fires (controlled) and the value of escaping low, the value of smoke alarms, etc. I highly recommend it for all families to view.

Being that it is reality, there are some concerns that very young children could have difficulty watching this, so an adult viewing is planned on Friday, July 14th  at 7PM with  a repeat viewing on July 21st at 7PM for the whole family. There is  also a video on the effects of burns that is not viewable for children which will be  available for viewing on July 14th. These will be screened at Town Hall.

WANTED! - The Indialantic Volunteer firefighters are looking to fill two positions in a non-combat status. We are looking for a physician who would like to volunteer his/her time to respond to fire calls and provide medical evaluation for firefighters. We are also looking for a public relations person to communicate our activities, both emergency or non-emergency, to the news media. Both positions are volunteer.  Please apply at the Indialantic Fire Rescue Department. We are always looking for volunteers.

Jon Macdonald, Fire Chief

Public Works Update – Ron Cassedy

Reminder – Driveway permits are required for installation of a new driveway, or if an old driveway is removed and replaced, whether gravel, concrete, asphalt or pavers.  The Building Department will issue driveway permits for a fee of $20 and inspect the project, and the Public Works Director will oversee and inspect the roadway and right-of-way.

Expanded Recycling Program Comes to Indialantic

A new, convenient recycling system is coming to the Town beginning June 1. Harris Sanitation’s improved system, known as a one-sort recycling system, allows residents to place recyclables in bins without presorting. Residents may continue to use all three bins and place them at the curb on collection day. Recycling collection will continue once a week on Thursdays.

The following items are now recyclable in Indialantic:

  •  Paper: Magazines, phone books, paper bags, envelopes (with or without plastic windows), junk mail, catalogs, cereal boxes, newspaper, glossy newspaper inserts, circulars and milk and juice cartons

  • Plastics: Only items with “necks,” numbers 1 through 7 (numbers are found on the bottom of the container)

  • Glass: Brown, green, clear

  • Aluminum, steel and tin cans: beverage, food
