  POLICE BEAT

The Police Department would like to thank everyone who visited our Crime Prevention Booth at the annual “Halloween Block Party”.  During the event we donated cable style gunlocks and we still have plenty of them left. These gunlocks will fit small and large bore handguns and rifles. For those who own a firearm, we want to help you by promoting safe and responsible firearm ownership and storage.

Children’s safety is very important to us. We are currently offering children’s identification kits to residents and their families. If your child is ever missing, the Identification Kit will provide important pertinent information.

Our Home Security Survey service can offer tips to help make your home a little safer.  Remember:

  1.  Adequate lighting is important to have at front and rear doorways. Try to use at least a 40watt light. Burglars will usually be deterred from a well lit home.

  2. Check the trees and shrubbery next to your windows and doors and make sure they are not too tall. Burglars can  use shrubbery as cover while taking their time gaining entry to your home.

  3. Simply locking all exterior doors and windows to your home is one of the best ways to prevent a burglary.

  4. Jalousy windows are fairly simple to disassemble from the outside. A protective screen mounted on the inside is a good way to prevent  entry for this type of window.

  5. Check exterior door hinges. If they are mounted on the outside, the pins can be removed and the door taken off.

For a complete home security survey or if you just have any questions please contact Community Policing Officer Terry Tenpenny at 723-7788 or ttenpenny@indialantic.com

With the Christmas season upon us, please be aware of your personal safety.

Please keep car doors locked both while driving and parked and don’t roll your windows down for strangers. Be particularly wary when stopped at traffic lights and when entering and exiting your vehicle in a parking lot. If you are struck from behind in what appears to be a minor rear-end accident, pull over in a well lit, populated area to investigate. While shopping, try to keep all packages and gifts out of sight, preferably locked in the trunk. Try to enter and exit stores (particularly malls) around other groups of shoppers. We tend to see an increase in burglaries this time of year so please remain vigilant in your efforts to keep your home and vehicles secure. If installed, set your alarm, even if you are only leaving for a short time. Successful burglaries to homes equipped with a good alarm system, that is kept armed, are very rare. Well-positioned outdoor lighting can also be a successful deterrent.

Thank you and have a safe and happy holiday season!

Chief Troy W. Morris

INDIALANTIC FIRE RESCUE

This is considered the most dangerous time of the year for fires and fire related deaths. Holiday safety should be most important in our minds as we enter the holiday season. Too often our minds are so focused on the joy and festivities that we tend to be lax with our safety awareness. Some of the things to remember as we prepare for the holidays:

bullet

Needles on fresh trees should be green, hard to pull out of the branches and should not break. The trunk should be sticky with sap.

bullet

Real trees must have an ample supply of water in the base. Do not leave real trees up for more than two weeks.

bullet

Do not place the tree close to a heat source.

bullet

Be sure artificial trees are flame resistant.

bullet

Inspect all lighting wires for fraying and bare spots as well as broken or cracked sockets. Use only lighting approved by an approved testing laboratory. Do not link more than three strands of lights together. Do not leave decorative lights on when no one is home and turn off all decorative lights when retiring to bed.

bullet

When burning candles be sure they are in stable holders. Do not place in or near the curtains or the tree and do not leave the house with candles burning.

bullet

Be certain that your smoke alarms are functioning or replace them before setting up your tree.

The Indialantic Fire Department wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday.

MAST ARM INSTALLATION

Traffic Control Devices is working to install green fluted post mast arm signals at the Riverside Drive/Fifth Avenue intersection.  These new signals will replace the span wire traffic signals that are presently at this intersection.  Council awarded the contract for $134,025 on November 18, 2003, with the funds being provided by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

The new signal installation is the latest component of this Joint Participation Agreement (JPA) with FDOT that was approved in March, 2000.  Previously, through this JPA the turn lane on US-192 at SR-A1A was lengthened and a turn lane was added to the outside lane of US-192 at S. Riverside Drive.  Additional related improvements include the concrete bicycle/walking path through Douglas Park and sidewalk improvements along the east side of S. Riverside Drive from Fifth Avenue to Eighth Avenue.

The Fifth Avenue/SR-A1A intersection is slated for signal replacement in FY-07 when FDOT installs a dual left turn lane at the intersection.  The new signals are proposed to be green fluted post mast arms similar to the ones currently being installed at the Riverside Drive/Fifth Avenue intersection
