TOWN CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY In spite of the drizzle and rain of November 16th, volunteers and participants came together to make Indialantic's 50th anniversary a great success. There were over 66 5K Run contestants, fishing contest winners, free lunch and music at Eastminster Presbyterian Church and garden tour visitors at Mary Hayward’s green jungle. The Indialantic Elementary School Chorus opened festivities to a packed audience. There was great music and the Town’s Volunteer Fire Department, the Indialantic and Melbourne Beach Rotary and Palm Bay Kiwanis clubs stayed all day to serve food. The beautiful birthday cake, donated and served by Dr. Hanny Zakhari and Diane Rubin, was also a big hit. Presentations by local historians Karen Raley and Frank Thomas and Dian Milligan and her "Indialantic Oldtimers" panel gave us new insight into our history. Anyone with historic items that could be loaned or donated for display in the new display case should contact Shirlee Walker at Town Hall. The Fiftieth Anniversary Committee wishes to thank ALL who made the day a success. The Town’s website has thank you's and pictures of the celebration.

With the Christmas season already upon us, I would like to re-visit some recommendations about personal safety that I originally wrote for the Town newsletter several years ago. This is traditionally the busiest shopping time of the year and with the addition of our northern visitors, traveling our roadways can often become an exercise in patience. Unfortunately, there is a certain element out there, which prefers to support their holiday season at the expense of others. Please keep your car doors locked both while driving and parked and don’t roll your windows down for strangers. Be particularly wary when stopped at traffic lights and when entering and exiting your vehicle in a parking lot. If you are struck from behind in what appears to be a minor rear-end accident, pull over in a well lit, populated area to investigate. Try to keep all packages and gifts out of sight, preferably locked in the trunk. We tend to see an increase in home burglaries this time of year so please remain diligent in your efforts to keep your residence secure and if installed, set your alarm, even if you are only leaving for a short time. Successful burglaries to homes equipped with a good alarm system, that is kept armed, are very rare. Have a happy and safe holiday season and a wonderful new year! Chief Troy W. Morris Five-Year CIP Approved The Council approved a five-year capital improvement program on November 19, 2002, for the current fiscal year and fiscal years 2004 through 2008. In addition to reflecting annual debt payment for previous town hall construction and the purchase of a fire truck, the program includes for the current fiscal year improvements to Douglas and Orlando parks, both to be funded with state grant monies; a replacement generator to support the Town’s emergency communications system; mast arm signal improvements at S. Riverside Drive and US-192, funded with state transportation monies; as well as funds for storm water drainage repair and street resurfacing. Projects beyond the current fiscal year include improvements at Nance Park and the beach, the Melbourne Causeway path, Sunrise Park, Sunset Park, parking lot improvements on Sixth Avenue, addressing Sixth Avenue drainage and pavement conditions, as well as funds allocated annually for storm water drainage repair and street resurfacing. Park projects are to be primarily funded with state recreation grant monies. |
Help Protect the Indian River Lagoon Each of us in our daily lives are connected to the Indian River Lagoon. Decisions you make today will determine the future of the lagoon. What you can do: ü Landscape with native and drought resistant plants ü Reduce the use of fertilizer and pesticides ü Use swales to retain and slow water flow ü Fix leaky faucets and use low flush toilets ü Wash cars on grass or sandy areas ü Direct rain gutters away from paved surfaces ü Dispose of toxic or hazardous materials carefully Using these simple techniques can help safeguard the quality of this important yet fragile environment for the future.
Each year fires occurring during the holiday season injure 2,000 people and cause over $500 million in damages. Simple life-saving steps can be taken to ensure a safe and happy holiday. § Selecting a tree – Needles on fresh trees should be green, hard to pull back from the branches and should not break. The trunk should be sticky to the touch. § Caring for your tree – Do not place your tree close to a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. If you are using a metallic or artificial tree, make sure it is flame retardant. Do not put your live tree up for longer than two weeks. Keep the tree stand filled with water at all times. § Maintain holiday lights – Inspect lights for frayed wires, bare spots and broken or cracked sockets. Use only lighting listed by an approved testing laboratory. Do not link more than three light strands unless the directions indicate it is safe. Don’t leave holiday lights unattended and periodically check the wires – they should not be warm to the touch. § Use of candles – Make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot easily be knocked down. Never put lit candles on a tree or leave the house with candles burning. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. Tom Barker, Fire Chief |
