INDIALANTIC
                RECORD        APRIL 2001

TREES GALORE!

The landscape of Indialantic has been improved through the planting of one hundred and eighty cabbage palm trees.  These trees are situated in the Melbourne Causeway median, along the north side of the causeway, along a portion of N. Riverside Place, along SR-A1A at Nance Park and in the center of Nance Park.

One-half of the project cost (i.e. $10,000) was provided through an Urban and Community Forestry grant from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  The balance of the cost is being provided through Town in-kind services and local cash match.

New trees in Nance Park

Florida Department of Transportation approval was provided in January for improvements along the Melbourne Causeway, which serves to connect segments of the Indian River Lagoon Scenic Highway.  The Council awarded the bid for the 180 cabbage palm trees to Manicure America of West Melbourne on January 16.

POLICE BEAT

We recently had several teenagers suffer drug overdoses from ingesting a tea-like substance made by brewing the flowers of the angel trumpet plant.  Some of you may have seen similar incidents on the news.  One of the teenagers became incoherent and fell into a coma.  Thanks to prompt medical treatment it appears as though he will make a full recovery.  The results could have been far more tragic.  The flowers were found growing in the yard of a residence in Indialantic and with the cooperation of the resident, those particular plants have been destroyed.  We are asking that all citizens check to see if any of these plants are growing in or around your yards and if so we ask that you remove them for the safety of the children of our community.  If you have any questions, need assistance removing the plants, or see any of the plants, please contact Detective Michael Casey at the Indialantic Police Department.

We would also like to let the citizens of Indialantic know that we have a limited supply of bicycle helmets available for children who need them.  We would like to send out a very special “thank you” to Beach Bicycle Works who not only spearheaded the collection effort for the helmets but also matched the money that was donated.  Simply come by the Police Department with your child to pick up a free helmet.  Please limit requests to one helmet per child so that we have enough to go around.

Lt. Troy Morris
Acting Police Chief

FIRE FACTS

We are still receiving calls about the solicitation of money by the Space Coast Firefighters’ Association.  Your fire department does not receive any funds donated to this organization.  The Indialantic Volunteer Firefighters solicit your help through a letter mail-out one time a year, in the latter part of October.

As a reminder, drowning ranks as one of the leading causes of death to young children. The keys to prevention are  barriers around pools, closely supervising children and being prepared in case of an emergency.  Physical barriers are effective, however they are not foolproof.  Never leave children unsupervised in or near a pool and keep rescue equipment nearby.  Let’s work together to protect our children.

Fire Chief
