2. REVIEW OF PLANS FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO RIVERSIDE PARK, DOUGLAS PARK AND THE CAUSEWAY.
Ruth Perry displayed her conceptual design plan for the project. She stated that the three areas were treated as one, creating a corridor with meandering sidewalks/ bikepath, sitting areas, picnic tables and a boardwalk at intervals. The existing trees on the causeway will be interspersed with palms. A split rail fence will separate the sidewalk/bikepath from the parking area.
Groups of plants in the median will provide a buffer/screen, hopefully it will prevent pedestrians from crossing the road. Boardwalks on each side of the relief bridge area will contain picnic tables and benches. A colonnade will provide a gateway effect into town.
Douglas Park will remain passive with seating and a walkway along the river.
A paved plaza at Riverside Park with a colonnade entrance will greet visitors who wish to fish or stroll along the extended pier with a gazebo at the end. A boardwalk will also run the entire length preventing further erosion from foot traffic along the river.
The Committee was pleased with the concept presented. Some suggestions were to add more trees for shade on the north side of the causeway. One idea was to divert the bikepath from Riverside Drive west on the causeway and under the highrise bridge, resuming through Douglas Park and back onto South Riverside Drive.
After additions suggested by the Committee members, Ms. Perry will bring back the altered plans for Committee approval.
